Lore
The Kingdom Medic on the southern muster-rolls is Field-Medic Tovin Hask, age twenty-seven, schooled at the Solstice Empire's Aurel-on-the-Hill infirmary and assigned to Cohort-Vesti-South-Twelve under Volley-Officer Vesti for the past four campaigns. Tovin's specialty is high-volume battlefield triage rather than hospital surgery; he sorts and stitches in the same motion, and the cohort's casualty-conversion rate (engaged-to-recovered) is the highest in the southern theater for cohorts of comparable line-pressure. The Empire's medical-board has noted this twice with offers of a research grant for surgical practice; Tovin has declined twice on the grounds that 'the line is where the bleeding is.'
His combat-grant is not a magical practice; it is the infirmary's standard tincture-and-suture training, applied at the speed the line allows. He carries a leather field-journal in which he has recorded every patient he has triaged in seven years on the line, with a one-line entry per patient — name, wound-type, outcome — and the journal is at twenty-three hundred and forty-one entries as of the most recent campaign-close. The Empire's medical-board has not asked to see the journal; Tovin has not offered it. The journal goes home to his sister's keeping at the close of each campaign and returns to the field at the start of the next, an arrangement Tovin's sister has agreed to without ever having opened the journal herself.
He is the medic-of-record for Cohort-Vesti-South-Twelve, which means he stands the line with Archer-Corporal Pell Vesti (char_kingdom_archer) and Recruit Solm Iren (char_kingdom_recruit), and he is the senior member of the small three-soldier arrangement that Volley-Officer Vesti has noted as 'effective and not in the manual.' Tovin's standing rule, in private to the Recruit, is that 'the medic moves first because the medic does not have to choose between targets,' a piece of doctrine the cohort's other line-medics have not adopted but have not contested. He is on quiet professional terms with Sister Aelin Voss (char_cleric_of_sol), who has prayed over two of his patients and recorded both in her chapter-house journal.
